The Blood Flow the Flow of Nutrients in the Body

Blood flow - In the World Book Encyclopedia the Blood article starts with the following description. It is the "river of life" flowing through our bodies. We cannot live without it. The blood must flow efficiently supplying the body with oxygen and nutrients.

Wow! The river of life! What actually flows in this river?

Plasma which consists of 90% water and 10% proteins which include such protein such as:

  • Albumin- which helps keeps the plasma in the vessels
  • Fibrinogen- which has an important role in clotting
  • Globulin- which helps fight infections

A shortage of any of these proteins can lead to serious repeated infections

  • Red blood cells which carry oxygen to the body tissues and remove the carbon dioxide
  • Hemoglobin an oxygen carrying protein that gives the cells their red color.
  • Enzymes that enable the cells to carry out the necessary chemical processes more effectively.
  • White blood cells that fight off infections
  • Platelets that causes clotting
