These Are Medications Prescribed For Heart Disease

These are the medications that I am taking and that my doctor prescribed for me. Each patient is different, with different medical needs. I am writing this for educational purposes only.

These are prescribed to reduce blood pressure, angina, the heart rate, cholesterol, and to reduce blood clotting.

To Reduce Angina

  • Nitrates - to dilate the veins and the arteries, this includes nitroglycerin patches, tablets, and sprays. Isorsobide which also decreases the workload of the heart. I take an isorsobide morning and night, I wear a patch, and I take nitroglycerin under my tongue when the pains are very severe.
  • Beta blockers' - which slows the heartbeat, decreases the blood pressure, and reduces the contraction strength of the heart muscle. I am taking Coreg. Coreg's generic name is carvedilol with brand names in different countries like Dilitrend, Dimitone, and Kredex.
  • Calcium channel blockers- they inhibit the ability of calcium atoms to enter the heart muscle and blood vessel cells, this reduces oxygen demand, and decreases high blood pressure. I am taking Norvasc

Medications to Reduce LDL and Total Cholesterol

ZOCOR, Zetia are two medications used to reduce the amount of cholesterol in the blood. I am taking both.

To Increase HDL and to Iinhibit VLDL-

Niacin which isn't really a medication but a vitamin, at very high doses that are effective in increasing HDL a prescription is needed.

To Reduce High blood pressure

I am taking Norvasc, which is a calcium channel blocker as I described earlier.

To Reduce Blood Clotting:

PLAVIX which is proven to help keep platelets from sticking together and forming clots. This helps blood flow more easily, reducing the risk of a future heart attack or stroke.

Aspirin which is an anti platelet it inhibits the normal function of the platelets which are involve in the clotting of the blood.

To reduce Homocysteine

Folic acid this is also a vitamin. For increased dosages a prescription is needed.

Why should the need to live on medications ever arise?

Why can't we take the necessary precautions to avoid heart disease in the first place, before the need for medications ever arises.

These are things that you can do to avoid the risk of developing heart disease and begin living a healthy lifestyle.

  • Quitting smoking
  • Reducing stress through various relaxation techniques
  • Controlling your blood pressure, through diets exercises, relaxation, vitamins and medications if the need arises
  • Reducing your cholesterol levels through exercise, vitamins, natural cures, and statins if prescribed to do so by your doctor.
Whatever steps you take to improve your health you will never regret!

Why wait till its too late, begin living a heart healthy lifestyle now. and start doing aerobic exercises for heart health.
