The Blood Stream

The River Of Life - The Flow - Five things the blood does as it flows through the human body.

Carries Oxygen to the Cells and Removing Carbon Dioxide from the Cells

All cells in the human body need to ingest oxygen, and need to emit carbon dioxide, to exist. When we inhale, air enters the air sacs of our lungs. Oxygen from the air, passes through the capillaries that surround each air sac. The oxygen enters into the blood stream.

The blood flow continues through the circulatory system, going through the arteries supplying the oxygen and other nourishment to all our cells. At the same time it removes carbon dioxide and other waste products from the cells.

It then continues its flow reaching the lungs and when we exhale the carbon dioxide is then released then into the air. New oxygen is ingested into the bloodstream; it then flows to the heart, which pumps it back into the body to further replenish the cells.

Blood Stream

Transporting Nutrients to the Cells and Removing Waste From the Cells

After food passes through our stomachs it enters the small intestine where digestion is completed.

The digested food molecules enter the stream through the capillaries in the small intestine. It then continues its flow nourishing the cells and organs in the body with the proper nutrients. At the same time waste enters the stream through the capillaries. As it flows into the liver, the liver filters the waste turning the harmful substances into urea which then gets passed out in the urine.

Protecting us From Diseases

As it flows through the body the white blood cells,of which there are several types, get activated. When they sense an invasion of any harmful substance in our bodies, they act in various ways either they kill, surround or digest the bacteria, or they produce anti-bodies and proteins that destroy the bacteria.

Carrying the Necessary Hormones

When the endocrine glands produce hormones they get released into the stream which acts as the chemicals messenger. When the hormone reaches the body part that it is supposed to regulate it releases it.

Distributing the Body Temperature

All cell activities produce heat. Some cells produce more heat then others. When the heat enters the blood stream it travels through the body where excess heat escapes through the skin. This heat regulation keeps the body temperature evenly distributed throughout the body making sure the heat producing cells don't over heat and the extremities don't freeze.

Here you can read about what actualy exists in the blood flow as it flows through the circulatory system.
