Reading The Nutrition Label

By learning how to read the nutrition label we are able to determine the health benefits or vice versa the hazards in the food we are eating.

When we become consciously aware of our need to live by and adhere to a healthy lifestyle, we start becoming conscious of the types of food we are eating. We begin to discern the various types of nutrients that are in our food. We start realizing the need to be knowledgeable about serving sizes and caloric intake. And we try to make sure that are diets are within the recommended Dietary Guidelines for Americans 2005.

The Fact Label

On all packaged food that we purchase there is a Nutrition fact label,, this label is a description of how the product complies with the guidelines determined by the US food and drug administration.

Learning how to read the label is extremely important, because many times the advertised description on the products are misleading, and we don't actually realize the serving sizes, and other factors that contribute to our weight gain.

The FDA has an interactive page on its website How to Understand and Use the Nutrition Facts Label where you can learn how to read the label and check the serving size, the calories, per serving, which nutrients to avoid, and which nutrients to make sure you are getting enough of.

Eating properly is one of the necessary components of living a healthy active lifestyle, which is the only way to make sure to avoid heart disease the leading cause of death.
